Roula Partheniou’s predominantly sculptural practice centres on an exploration of the replica, calling into question the language of everyday objects, and the ways that we read and decipher our environment. Her installations, which are often site-specific, utilize mechanisms such as optical illusion, associative play, visual similes, material puns, color cues and the double-take, to draw an alternate logic from commonplace materials. The replica is employed as a tool to deconstruct the experience of perception—placing the viewer somewhere between what they see, and what they thought they knew. Partheniou has exhibited across Canada and internationally including shows at Fundacion Calosa (Irapuato); Arróniz Arte Contemporáneo (Mexico City); Wu Gallery (Lima); Musée régional de Rimouski; Dunlop Art Gallery (Regina); Tanya Bonakdar (New York); Oakville Galleries; and the Museum of Bat Yam. In December 2019 she was artist in residence at Google Headquarters, in Mountain View, California.
