This series of drawings by Derek Sullivan is based on the info-graphic automatically generated for most books sold on Amazon, in which a silhouette of a figure “holds” the book to give the prospective buyer a sense of scale of the item. Every drawing, a small proposition, becomes catalysed by the graphic into imagining an entire text. Sullivan’s work is concerned with how objects change through their use, circulation and evolving shifts-in-context. Sullivan received his BFA from York University (Toronto) and his MFA from the University of Guelph. He has held solo exhibitions at the MacLaren Art Centre (Barrie); the Dunlop Art Gallery (Regina); The Power Plant (Toronto); Oakville Galleries; White Columns (New York); and Kiosk (Ghent). His books, prints and editions have been published by Paul & Wendy Projects (Toronto); Art Metropole (Toronto); Boabooks (Geneva); NSCAD Lithography Workshop (Halifax); Printed Matter, Inc. (New York); and Poligrafa (Barcelona). Sullivan has been nominated five times for the Sobey Art Award, and was shortlisted in 2012. He lives and works in Toronto and Forest Mills.
