Raymonde April’s photographs capture moments of everyday life that are transformed and magnified through a refined, yet intuitive, use of formal qualities. April is fascinated with the transformation of life into image, and uses various photographic methods to investigate notions of memory, history and fragmentation. Over the past thirty years, her work has been shown in numerous solo exhibitions in Quebec and abroad at venues including the Musée d’art de Joliette, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery (Vancouver). In 2010, April was named an Officer of the Order of Canada, and has been granted several other distinctions, including the Prix du Québec Paul-Emile-Borduas (2003) and the Paul de Hueck and Norman Walford Career Achievement Award for Art Photography (2005). Her work can be found in several collections, including the Bibliothèque nationale de France (Paris); the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa); and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (Quebec City). April is currently based in Montreal.
