Patrick Cruz’s experience migrating from the Philippines to Canada prompted him to question notions of diaspora and displacement as well as the adoption of a new cultural identity through his practice. Cruz uses aesthetic strategies that adopt folk and pre-colonial sensibilities, such as ornamentation and magical thinking, to exorcise personal and political narratives as an attempt to decolonize pre-existing hegemonic ideologies as well as understand and interrogate the rapid change of our globalized world. Cruz studied painting at the University of the Philippines Diliman and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University of Art + Design (Vancouver) and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Guelph. In 2015, Cruz won the 17th annual RBC Canadian Painting Competition.
