Shuvinai Ashoona is a graphic artist based in Kinngait (Cape Dorset), NU. She first began drawing in the early 1990s, when her younger sister encouraged her to go to the Kinngait studios. Ashoona first came to prominence in the late 1990s. Ashoona’s work is exhibited nationally and internationally, and has been included in major exhibitions such as the 18th Biennale of Sydney, and “Oh, Canada” at Mass MoCA. She has exhibited widely, including at the National Gallery of Canada, alongside Toronto-based artist Shari Boyle at the Justina Barnicke Gallery at Hart House, The Power Plant (Toronto), Remai Modern (Saskatoon), Esker Foundation (Calgary), and the Centre for Contemporary Arts (Glasgow). Her work is held in numerous public and private collections. Ashoona is also the subject of a documentary art film, Ghost Noise, produced and directed by Marcia Connolly. She was the 2017 REVEAL Indigenous Art Awards Laureate of The Hnatyshyn Foundation.
