Kara Hamilton’s practice explores how context, history, durability, and material agency define shifts in cultural value through the lens of functional and non functional currency. Her approach understands decoration as a paradox: though often an exercise in gratuitous disguise, it can also be a means to identify and locate—a cultural currency that covers and simultaneously reveals. She pursues these inherent contradictions through what she terms as “critical decoration.” Hamilton has exhibited nationally and internationally at spaces such as Cooper Cole (Toronto), the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto), Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art (Winnipeg), EFA Project Space (New York), Tate Liverpool, Kunstverein Amsterdam, Taut and Tame (Berlin), and Salon 94 (New York). She is also the co-director of Kunstverein Toronto.
