Using drawing and installation, Ed Pien explores curiosity, wonder and enchantment with a focus on the strange and grotesque, deploying these as means to challenge preconceptions and celebrate diversity, facilitating engaged perceptual experiences and opening up spaces for meaningful exchange. For Breath: Mysteries Pien took deep breaths and exhaled for as long as he could. His warm, moist breath, mixed with the utterly shocking cold air, articulated itself as momentary lines, shapes and forms of drawings, captured by a camera. Pien has shown in venues that include the Drawing Centre (New York); the Victoria and Albert Museum (London, UK); the Canadian Cultural Centre (Paris); The Goethe Institute (Berlin); YYZ, the Art Gallery of Ontario (both Toronto); Musée d’art contemporain de Montreal, Oboro, Musée des beaux arts (all Montreal); Art Gallery of Greater Victoria; Musée des beaux-arts (Montreal); Songzhuang Art Centre (Beijing); the National Art Gallery of Canada (Ottawa); and at MASS MoCA. He has participated in the Montreal, Sydney and Moscow Biennales.
