Born in Malaysia and raised in Newfoundland, Omar Badrin makes work heavily based on his biography and explores the racial and cultural anxieties that stem from his upbringing. Badrin’s grotesque masks are self-portraits that serve to reveal, rather than hide, his feelings of otherness growing up as a visible minority in a predominantly white environment. Badrin obtained his MFA in 2015 at OCAD University, where he was awarded a graduate medal for his work in the Interdisciplinary Master’s in Art, Media and Design program. His work has been exhibited across Canada, including at the inaugural Bonavista Biennale. Most recently, his work was featured a group show at the Textile Museum of Canada (Toronto). Badrin has received project and travel grants from the Toronto Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts.
