Shellie Zhang (b. 1991, Beijing, China) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Tkaronto/Toronto, Canada. Her Smell is part of a series of work that features different assortments of vintage and found items from an imagined vanity. Originally commissioned for the Art Gallery of Ontario, the arrangement of contemporary objects reference items found within the Thomson Collection’s display of miniature objects and curiosities at the AGO. These objects are vessels, mirrors, and emblems of ornament and excess. In this work, necklace busts mirror stoic ivory busts, perfume bottles allude to snuff bottles, and compact mirrors symbolize pride, narcissism, and the lavish wealth of past eras. By pairing rare collectable items with thrift store goods, the series exemplifies the brevity of worldly pleasures in a late-stage consumer world, and the futility of symbols of femininity, decadence, and luxury. Zhang has exhibited at venues including WORKJAM (Beijing), Asian Art Initiative (Philadelphia) and Gallery 44 (Toronto). Recent and upcoming projects include exhibitions at Artspace (Peterborough), Patel Gallery (Toronto), AKA Artist-Run (Saskatoon) and the Anchorage Museum (Anchorage).
