Sonny Assu's Landlines is a painting and collage series that sees nautical charts paired with Kwakwaka'wakw formline. In line with his Speculator Boom series and as a progression to The Paradise Syndrome, Landlines was inspired by a Hupacasath man's response to early colonial surveyors demarcating the boundaries of his reserve: “They make magic lines on the land that only they can see.” Assu is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is informed by Kwakwaka'wakw and Western principles of art-making. Assu received his BFA from the Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2002 and his MFA from Concordia University in 2017. His work has been accepted into the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa); Seattle Art Museum; Vancouver Art Gallery; and various other public and private collections across Canada, the US and the UK.
