Elise Rasmussen’s Summits is part of a body of work that explores the history of alpinism and its relationship to the concepts of extraction and conquest. Many of the earliest mountain climbers were local crystal hunters, who would become the first expert mountaineers to lead expeditions to the highest of peaks, such as the summit of Mont Blanc, which serves as the backdrop for Summits. Rasmussen is a research-based artist working with lens-based media. She has exhibited, performed and screened her work internationally, including venues such as the Brooklyn Museum; the Bronx Museum; Pioneer Works (New York); Night Gallery (Los Angeles); Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin); Sharjah Art Foundation; Institute of Modern Art (Brisbane); Dazibao (Montreal); and Doris McCarthy Gallery at the University of Toronto (Scarborough). Born in Edmonton, Elise received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is based in Brooklyn and Los Angeles.
