Erika DeFreitas is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Scarborough. Placing an emphasis on process, gesture, the body, documentation and paranormal phenomena, she works through her attempts to understand concepts of loss, post-memory, inheritance and objecthood. DeFreitas holds a Masters of Visual Studies from the University of  Toronto and has exhibited nationally and internationally, including at Project Row Houses and the Museum of African American Culture (both in Houston), Fort Worth Contemporary Arts, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery and Platform Centre for Photographic and Digital Arts (Winnipeg). She is the recipient of the Toronto Friends of the Arts 2016 Finalist Artist Prize and the 2016 John Hartman Award. DeFreitas was longlisted for the 2017 Sobey Art Award.
