Kablusiak’s drawing series Life is Okay Sometimes exemplifies the playful approach their practice takes in the handling of heavy subject matter. The mark making and poignant phrases convey an honesty and immediacy in their tongue-in-cheek exploration of topics such as: contemporary Indigeneity, feelings of estrangement from one’s homeland and art world pressures. The light-hearted nature of their practice extends gestures of empathy and solidarity, inviting a reconsideration of the perceptions of contemporary Indigeneity. Kablusiak is an Inuvialuk artist and curator based in Alberta, and holds a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design. They recently completed the Indigenous Curatorial Research Practicum at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, and were shortlisted for the 2019 Sobey Art Award representing the Prairies and the North.
