James Gardner’s recent paintings reflect a continuous research process that is centered on the agency of images as well as the histories of western esotericism. Working from a collection of iconographic elements from archives and image banks, Gardner redeploys historical imagery through the creation of new paintings that seem frozen in processes of resurgence and disintegration. Born in Kitchener, Gardner currently lives in Montreal, having just graduated with an MFA from Concordia University. He’s had recent solo exhibitions at Galerie Nicolas Robert (Montreal) and Concordia’s MFA Gallery (Montreal). In 2020, Gardner was awarded the Petry Award and the William Blair Bruce European Travel Scholarship.
