Naomi Yasui’s practice is interested in the tensions between materiality and visualization as an aspect of the entanglement between maker and material, and object and viewer. She questions the presentation of vibrant objects in museums as static, flattened catalogue images. Through a studio practice rooted in clay, Yasui creates forms that speak to the pleasure of material processes, admiration for historical ceramics, and her immersion in motherhood and domesticity. Yasui has been exhibiting nationally and internationally since 2006, and her current collection of vases available at Minka House in Toronto. Her latest solo and duo exhibitions have been held at Eastern Edge Gallery (St. John’s), and ESP Gallery (Toronto). She has participated in group exhibitions at SUPPORT (London, ON) and Xpace Cultural Centre (Toronto ON), and was an artist-in-residence at Guldagergaard (Denmark) in 2014.
