Annie Briard’s practice explores how visual perception shapes our interpretation of the world and of each other using lens-based media, light, and the moving image. For the series In Possible Lands, three slide projectors blend at random slides from her father’s archive, completed while he was travelling across Canada 45 years ago working on the railway, and her own slides from current visits to the same locations in the Rockies and the Canadian and US western coast. The newly formed images are composed by chance and then photographed, offering prescient insights into our future lands as they transform from the shifting climate. Briard holds a BFA from Concordia University and an MFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design, where she currently teaches. Her work has been presented in numerous solo exhibitions at the Burrard Arts Foundation (Vancouver), Queen’s University (Kingston), the AC Institute (New York), and the Joyce Yahouda Gallery (Montreal), as well as group shows, festivals, and fairs internationally.
