Mark Igloliorte is an interdisciplinary artist of Inuit ancestry from Nunatsiavut, Labrador. He works primarily in painting and drawing. Ulu and Skate Shoesis an observational still life painting which physically brings together Inuit and Skateboarding cultural objects. The ulu has many uses including skinning seals; specifically removing the fat from the hide. Inuit continue to hunt seal, eat seal and wear seal skin. Inuit self-governments advocate for sustainable seal skin clothing markets despite animal rights activists colonial view that seal skins are amoral. The skateboard shoe is made of cowhide suede. Igloliorte currently lives in Vancouver where he teaches at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
