Gabi Dao’s interdisciplinary practice insists on counter-memory, intimacy, hyphenation, multiple truths, and blurred temporalities through sculpture, installation, moving image, and sound. Her work often begins with her interests in “patchwork” conceptions of time and materiality, tracing histories of the everyday through themes of globalization, consumption, belief, and belonging. Dao graduated from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2014. Since then she has shown her work at Unit 17, Vancouver Art Gallery, grunt gallery, VIVO Media Arts Centre (all Vancouver), Audain gallery (Whistler), Terrain Biennial (Los Angeles), Blinkers (Winnipeg), Images Festival (Toronto), Kamias Triennale (Quezon City), and International Film Festival in Rotterdam. Dao is an artist and co-organizer at Duplex, a DIY project space + studio collective based the unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.  Dao is longlisted for the 2021 Sobey Award.
