Renée Van Halm’s Chains brings together images derived from diverse sources, such as objects and background cued from fashion and decor magazines. The combination of recognizable elements within reconfigured contexts creates a disorienting tension between the purely formal and the familiar. Van Halm has had over 40 solo exhibitions, most recently at Birch Contemporary (Toronto) and a solo survey at the West Vancouver Art Museum, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions including at the Vancouver Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Canada, University of  Toronto Art Centre, the 2017 Canadian Biennial at the National Gallery of Canada and Architypes (Sydney, Australia and Tokyo). Van Halm was a founding member of Mercer Union (Toronto, 1979).
