Lou Sheppard works in interdisciplinary audio, performance and installation based practices. Dawn Chorus and Evensong are two compositions based on the translation of spectrograms of birds at Fool's Paradise, home of Canadian landscape painter Doris McCarthy; listen to the music compositions: Dawn Chorus and Evensong. The compositions speak to the loss of birdsongs from our sonic environment due to increasing urbanization and climate change. Of Irish, English and Scottish settler ancestry, Sheppard was raised on unceded Mi'Kmaq territory, and lives in Tiohtiá:ke/Montréal. They have exhibited in Canada and internationally, including the Antarctic Biennale and the Antarctic Pavilion in Venice. In 2017 Sheppard received the Emerging Atlantic Artist Award and in 2018 was long-listed for the Sobey Art Award. Sheppard is currently artist-in-residence at McGill University.
