Joshua Schwebel's conceptual artwork is developed out of site-specific research and grounded in institutional critique, resulting in projects that singularly address the context in which they are experienced. As a trans person who passes as white, cis, and male, he uses this intersection of privilege to infiltrate and deconstruct institutional authority, focusing on how to articulate invisible traces of difference. Schwebel's work has been exhibited within Canada and internationally. Selected solo exhibitions include Centre Clark (forthcoming, Montreal, 2021), Or Gallery (Vancouver), Kreuzberg Pavillon (Berlin), the Fonderie Darling (Montreal), and Centrum (Berlin). Schwebel has held residencies at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin), Rupert (Vilnius), Standards (Milan), among others.
