Steven Cottingham’s practice concerns the discrepancy between realism and reality, with particular attention to the role of images in representing or obscuring labour, ecology, and abstract social relations. Because representation is always a question of value (what merits inclusion? what is deemed irrelevant or inessential?), realist images can be understood not simply as documentary in nature, but as a power struggle over the expression of social values. Cottingham is based on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations (Vancouver, Canada). His recent solo exhibitions have been held at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art (Kelowna), and at Wil Aballe Art Projects (Vancouver). Currently he is co-editor of the art theory webzine QOQQOON.
