Caroline Mousseau’s paintings offer simple gestures like casual, incidental drawings. There is almost nothing to see, yet her forms are highly constructed—small, sequenced marks are driven by exhaustive labour, drags and accumulations that only provide as much as they receive in return. Mousseau’s compositions unfurl themselves slowly as an act of shared thinking, and lean with the familiar pleasure of forms that trail behind a current moment. Mousseau has exhibited throughout North America, with presentations at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery (Oshawa); Birch Contemporary (Toronto); Art Toronto; CYDONIA (Dallas); and Zona Maco (Mexico City), among others. She was the recipient of the 2019 Joseph Plaskett Award in Painting and in 2014, was curated in the publication 100 Painters of Tomorrow (2014). She holds a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design (2012) and is completing her MFA at the University of Guelph (2020).
